Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a condition in which a person feels recurring and undesired thoughts; ideas and obsession that make them do things repeatedly (compulsion). Things like over cleansing, rechecking can severely interfere in day to day affairs and routine. In some cases these recurrent thoughts might not be involved in disrupting the daily life activity.

People suffering from OCD are more or less rigid in their activities and inhibition of such activities makes them distressed and worrisome. These people may or may not accept their repetitive behaviour depending upon their awareness. But realisation of this is not enough as they find it extreme difficult in disengaging themselves from these repetitive or compulsive behaviour.

Obsessive Compulsive disorders involves two forms One is obsessive and other is compulsive

Obsessions

As said obsession of anything is bad hence is this. This anxiety and worry may interrupt daily activities. Commonly encountered anxieties are:-

Contamination – this can be related to contamination via by body fluids, microorganisms, filth, and other materials
Losing control – this is more pertaining to insecurities
Perfectionism – this condition may result in perfecting an activity leading to intense focus on accuracy or recall things.
Harm – that may cause holding self responsible for anything bad happening in future.
Unwanted sexual attention
Religious or superstitious beliefs, – that concerns offending God and would lead to sins and unblessed.
Compulsions

It is a matter of fact that not all repetitious behaviour comes under compulsion. Many people apply repetitive behaviour like bedtime or prayer routine that is a part of their life.
For a person suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), nevertheless requires to carry out repetitious behaviour in extreme, it occurs recurrently, and it is time-consuming. The behaviour may take on a ritualistic characteristic.

Some examples include:

  • washing and cleaning, including hand washing
  • monitoring the body for symptoms
  • repeating routine activities, such as getting up from a chair
  • mental compulsions, such as frequently reviewing an event
